Holistic Ways To Fight The Flu

Hello, dear ones!

It would seem that flu season is very strong, particularly in the US right now ….. and I thought I’d share some holistic ways you can fight the flu + boost your immunity, naturally!!

None of the advice below is hard to do, so don’t fret! Fighting the flu, various colds and strengthening your immune system is hands-down something to be working on year round, but especially when things like flu season starts up.

Unless you stay at home 100% of the time you have a chance of getting the nasty flu virus, known by its Latin name Influentia,and having a strong immune system is important to staying well!

While getting the flu vaccine can cut your chance of contracting the flu by around 87%, not everyone gets the vaccine or even feels inclined – that is your personal choice, for you to make by your own free will.

Though mainstream medicine does have good options for healthy immune systems, there is a definite shift towards the more holistic, simple, age-tested medicines that so many of us are turning to and constantly learning about!

Beings that I am a part-time blogger, creator and full-time wife as well as female farmer, much of my time is spent in our cozy home. While I love this for the most part, it is inevitable that sometimes the need arises to go out to town for many reasons, if not just to enjoy some time out – which is a healthy thing to do.

But what about keeping your health stellar, when out and about?!

Let’s see some tips I’ve gathered below!

01. Sleep

Getting your sleep, enough adequate rest, is important to keeping yourself well.

While we all have stressors from day to day, the importance of rest remains a constant wellness plan that dates back to the dawn of time!

Change your schedule as needed to allow for 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night – your overall wellbeing will thank you, and will also help your immune system grow stronger to help ward off unwanted bacteria and sickness!

02. Drink Green Tea

While not everyone likes hot drinks, the beauty of green tea is that it can be drank whilst hot or cold!

But, why drink green tea to help build your immune system or fight off the flu?

Green tea contains compounds called catechins which are able to boost the immune systems ability to fight the flu! Green tea has been used for ages by multiple countries and people groups to help a myriad of health related subjects.

If drink green tea really isn’t your thing, you can find green tea cough drops – so, you really have no excuse on this one 😉

03. Drink Enough Water 

Keeping yourself hydrated every day helps to flush out toxins and bacteria from your body, thus helping your immune system work more efficiently instead of fighting for water to keep it working!

I usually drink around ten glasses a day plus two for every hour I workout, so all in all, I am drinking the recommended amount plus some!

And remember – if you drink coffee, you will need to drink even more water to replace the coffee! Just a little tip.

04. Garlic. Garlic. Garlic. 

Don’t forget about the garlic!! Garlic is commonly known for being anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal.

Practically speaking, garlic is a natural antibiotic that your body does not grow resistance to, which means it has on-going positive benefits! How awesome is that?!

You don’t need any one fancy way of getting the garlic in your system – cook with it, research ways to use it in your food and do it often!

05. DIY Thieves Oil 

If you can’t find Thieves Oil but know how amazingly powerful this essential oil it, don’t worry! You can make it at home!

How many drops/ounces you need to use depends on what you are putting the essential oil mixture in (for example: a roller bottle, dropper bottle, jar etc.) but the ingredients are fairly simple:

  • Clove bud essential oil
  • Lemon essential oil
  • Cinnamon bark essential oil
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Rosemary essential oil

After mixing these together, you will have a wonderful Thieves Oil blend to use in compresses, diffuse in the air, or to rub onto the soles of the feet!

*NOTE: If applying essential oils to your skin, you must mix the essential oil blend with at least a 50/50 mix of carrier oil of your choice.

06. Flu-Fighting DIY Bath Salts

If you’re one who likes to soak in a warm, relaxing bath, you could try fighting the flu + keeping your immunity built up by using this simple bath salt recipe! (I found the recipe here)

You will need:

  •  6 drops of tea tree oil
  • 3 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 2 drops of lavender oil
  • 1 cup of Epsom salt
  • 2 tablespoons of liquid oil (olive, grapeseed, jojoba, etc.)
  • glass container with a tightly sealed top

After mixing these into the Epsom salt, store in your tightly-sealed jar and sprinkle some in a few times a week to help fight off the flu – all while relaxing in a warm bath! (and maybe a good novel, too! 😉 )

07. Simple Oils To Diffuse 

If you do have a diffuser (which you can get very economically at Walmart) you can diffuse these essential oils below to help fight Influenza, ease symptoms and promote wellbeing if you do happen to catch the flu, and help purify + strengthen your immune system:

  • Lemon – clears your nasal passages and allows for steady breathing
  • Lavender – relieves stress, fatigue, depression, and headaches
  • Peppermint – reduces coughs, sinusitis, and throat infections
  • Thyme – has antibacterial activity to help fight respiratory infections
  • Eucalyptus – reduces fevers and fights viruses
  • Tea Tree Oil – inhibits bacteria and fights infections
  • Chamomile – relieves cold and flu symptoms
  • Clove (Eugenol) – has antiviral and antifungal properties to clean surfaces or air
  • Cinnamon– can clean surfaces or air
  • Rosemary – is another nontoxic way to clean surfaces or air

Some of these pair well together, too, but just remember that sometimes less is best when it comes to diffuser oils + matching them!!

08. Zinc It Out

Taking a safe amount of a Zinc supplement is powerful on it’s own, and amazing at warding off the flu and boosting your immune system!

Carefully read the dosage on the Zinc supplements you choose to make sure you are taking it safely, and be careful if you decide to give Zinc to children. Read all the labels and consult a Holistic Physician or Medical Doctor if you have any questions.

You can find Zinc supplements at Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, GNC and Whole Foods for quality Zinc!

09. Cooking With Bay Leaves 

For anyone that loves cooking as much as I do, this is for you!

Bay leaves, also known by its Latin name Laurus Nobililis, are chock full of Proximates, Minerals, Vitamins and Lipids to create a very powerful herb! It was also used in ancient Greece and Rome to decorate the most beloved heroes.

You can also make a Bay Leaf poultice and place it on the chest, in case you do happen to have Influenza or the common cold, and bronchitis!

10. Incorporate Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup tastes delicious, has a subtle sweetness and is super easy to get kids immune systems stronger!

You can administer elderberry syrup by taking 1 to 2 tablespoons a day or by using it in hot teas, which is what I do most frequently.

The better-quality elderberry syrup you get, the better it will be at it’s job!

I recommend buying this syrup at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, or from private farms that are GMO-free and organic!

Personally, my husband and I use Norms Farms Elderberry Wellness Syrup – they are located in Pittsboro, North Carolina and we enjoy supporting other North Carolina agriculturists and farmers in our area!

Also take note that some herbs, natural medicine, and herbal supplements may interact with certain mainstream medicines you may be taking – so make sure that you research the medicine you are on before taking any herbal supplements.
